Open Meetings for Students and Faculty to Discuss Next Strategic Plan

Although a few years still remain under the strategic directions of CMU 2010:  The Vision Plan, CMU's campus leaders and Board of Trustees are directing our attention to the next strategic plan in preparation for July 2010.  What comes "Beyond 2010"?  In which initiatives does CMU need to focus more attention and energy.  We have recently concluded our staff open meetings and will now proceed with the open meetings for faculty and students.  The current schedule is as follows:

More information on the planning process including a timeline of events and the foundational matrix are available on our "Beyond 2010" website.  We have also posted the ideas you all have come up with in previous sessions and posted them on the respective site (Staff feedback, Student feedback).

Google Analytics

Earlier this summer, the Communications Committee for CMU 2010 began using a free tool provided by Google that provides measures for tracking website visits and content interest (among other things) called Google Analytics.  We have found this tool to be especially helpful in indicating what topics are most searched by individuals locally, regionally, and even nationally.  Since we aspire to become nationally prominent, it is refreshing to observe hits on our website all over the world.  Since tracking the site in early August, we've welcomed 776 unique visitors.  On average, about 39 visitors come to our site every day, and each visitor - on average - views approximately 3 pages and stays on the site for two and half minutes.  We've reached 32 countries worldwide, 34 of the 50 states, and, although not surprisingly, have experienced the most hits from individuals within the Mt. Pleasant area.  Some of the most viewed pages include:

Spotlight on "The Will" at Idlewild:  Classical Connections to African American Culture

"The Will" at Idlewild: Classical Connections to African American Culture was an event in which former English Department professor Sandra Seaton produced her new play, “The Will,” in the historic community of Idlewild, Michigan (near Baldwin).  Idlewild was a very, very important resort community for black Americans during the 1930s through 1950s, when segregation made it difficult or impossible for African Americans to vacation at white-run resorts.  Consequently, Idlewild attracted a national clientele and was especially noted for presenting the highest level of musical entertainment, including Louis Armstrong, Sammy Davis, Jr., Duke Ellington, Ray Charles, and countless others.

In conjunction with the play (which alluded to the 19th century African-American opera sensation, Elizabeth Taylor Greenfield, known as “The Black Swan”), the Center for Public Service through Music and the Arts partnered with the Sphinx Organization, the Detroit Public Schools, and a Detroit music parents organization to provide three days of music workshops, performances, and panel discussions for 45 students from Detroit’s Renaissance High School, Cass Technical High School, and the Detroit School for the Arts.  Thanks to Randi L'Hommedieu, chair of the school of music, for sharing this diversity event with us!

How to Become a Spotlight Project

Since July 2006, we have included "Spotlights" on several projects that are helping CMU 2010 move forward.  Please note that we are interested in ANY project that allows CMU to realize our Vision, not only those that have been funded with CMU 2010 Vision Funds.

To share your success with the CMU community, please email CMU2010@cmich.edu.   Feel free to identify the month you would like to be featured and a short summary of progress or list of highlights to be displayed.  We are more than willing to assist you in documenting your spotlight, so you may provide the name of a contact person and the best way to reach this person for a short interview as an alternative.  We are very grateful for those that volunteer!  Thank you.
