Progress Report - May 2008
Fireside Chat
The Communications Committee held yet another successful CMU 2010 Fireside Chat in April. Every seat was full for our last event of the semester in preparation for the final Request for Proposals (RFP) process that began April 9 and will continue through October 17th. We plan to provide a follow-up Proposal Development Workshop very early in the fall for interested parties, so please take 30 seconds to complete this poll to let us know what time is most convenient for you!
Also, if you have questions after reviewing the RFP Web site, please feel free to contact Kara Beery at ext. 3631 and she will direct you to a contact person on the Academic Affairs staff. For your convenience, we also provide a CMU 2010 Project Discussion Board to assist you in discovering potential collaborators for your projects.
Monitoring Our KPIs
As we begin to prepare for our annual report to the Board of Trustees later this summer, we begin to examine our progress on the Key Performance Indicators as a whole. To that end, we have compiled a short PowerPoint presentation identifying KPIs at CMU that are advancing, struggling, and have had their ups & downs that details how the KPIs have changed since 2005, as highlighted by President Rao on April 28, 2008(Update 72).
Student-Focused Communication Planned for Fall
Since CMU 2010 is a part of everything we are doing to improve CMU, the Communications Committee plans to facilitate more student-focused conversations beginning this fall. Our purpose is to become even more transparent and inclusive of our student body as we progress through 2010, being sure that students understand their importance as we think strategically.
Students play a greater role in 2010 than many may believe; not only are many students actively engaged in projects across campus that are sponsored by the Vision Funds, but our priorities are guidelines for improving the entire educational experience of CMU students. Many of our Key Performance Indicators were chosen because CMU values the outcomes and students contribute to these figures through their participation (e.g., CMU values Community Service/Volunteering, Student Research, Study Abroad, etc.). In our upcoming events, we hope to create an atmosphere that bolsters a richer understanding for students so they can become more engaged and make the most of their CMU experience.
KPIs
KPI 10: Study Abroad Program has been updated with 2007-08 data. Although we notice a slight decline from last year's participation (477), 446 students were involved in the program this year which is an increase from our baseline in 2005. For more information on this KPI, follow the link below:
Spotlight on CMU's Online Digital Object Repository (CONDOR)
During the 2007-2008 academic year, the Libraries and OIT partnered to work collaboratively with six university departments to address a need which ties in closely with several 2010 goals. The need to establish a centralized gathering place for university research, information, and creative output was identified by various university units, each of which was independently pursuing a repository project. The Libraries and OIT proposed a unified project that would pool efforts and resources, thereby providing an institutional repository that would meet the needs of our project partners and the entire university. The Libraries contributed the funding and the majority of the staffing for the pilot project which runs through August of 2009.
According to Clifford Lynch in the May/June, 2006, issue of EDUCAUSE Review, “Institutional repositories… are services deployed and supported at the institutional level to offer dissemination management, stewardship, and where appropriate, long-term preservation of both the intellectual work created by an institutional community and the records of the intellectual and cultural life of the institutional community.”
CMU’s Online Digital Object Repository (CONDOR) constitutes Central Michigan University’s institutional repository. This project is lead by the Repository Team which includes representatives from the Libraries, OIT, the Herbert H. and Grace A. Dow College of Health Professions, FaCIT, ProfEd, the Department of English Language and Literature, the Department of Geography, and the Department of Counseling and Special Education.
CONDOR supports the 2010 Priory I (Teaching and Learning) by providing a vehicle to showcase and distribute student research, by providing more opportunities for collaboration as research in other disciplines comes to light, and by offering easy access to a variety of published and unpublished research. It supports 2010 Priority 3 (Enhance the Infrastructure for Research and Creative Activity) by providing a vehicle to showcase all research and publication, including grant funded research. CONDOR can fulfill grant requirements of widely disseminating research findings in an open access environment. In addition, CONDOR utilizes “modern technologies to enhance teaching, and learning and research” by offering researchers a mechanism for making their research discoverable and easily accessible. And finally, CONDOR can meet the goal to “Attract and manage resources to enable faculty, staff and students to be successful in meeting these goals” by providing a mechanism for managing resources needed to conduct, disseminate and promote research.
At this time, the Repository Team has made significant progress developing policies and procedures, creating a website, gathering copyright permissions, and adding repository objects. We are beginning to work with university units to solicit additional partners and contributions. Among the contributions being sought for CONDOR are:
· Images
· Published journal articles, book reviews, book chapters
· Unpublished research
· Poster presentation
· Performances
· Dissertations and theses
· Grant proposals
· Master syllabi
· Learning objects
For more information on this project and/or how you can get involved, please contact Ruth Helwig at 774-2404. You may access CONDOR at http://repository.cmich.edu.
How to Become a Spotlight Project
Since July 2006, we have included "Spotlights" on several projects that are helping CMU 2010 move forward. Please note that we are interested in ANY project that allows CMU to realize our Vision, not only those that have been funded with CMU 2010 Vision Funds.
To share your success with the CMU community, please email CMU2010@cmich.edu. Feel free to identify the month you would like to be featured and a short summary of progress or list of highlights to be displayed. We are more than willing to assist you in documenting your spotlight, so you may provide the name of a contact person and the best way to reach this person for a short interview as an alternative. We are very grateful for those that volunteer! Thank you.
