Progress Report - August 2008

Student-Focused Communications

In preparation of the new academic year, the ComCom subcommittee focused on student awareness has been meeting aggressively to determine the best venues for attracting student attention.  Thus far we have developed a Web site specifically focused on student-interest topics.  We also successfully represented CMU 2010 at MAINStage 2008, distributing 250 CMU 2010 frisbees to students urging them to check out our Web site for more details.  Approximately 500 paper handouts were given out and a handful of students signed up to request additional CMU 2010 information via email.  This effort is one of several planned to attract the interest of students over the course of the next year.

We are always looking for more ideas and students to participate in our effort.  If you have any suggestions or would like to get involved, please contact CMU2010.

KPIs

The following KPI has been updated with FY08 data.

Spotlight on The Fall & Balance Center (FBC) for Assessment & Rehabilitation

The Fall and Balance Center for Assessment and Rehabilitation (FBC) at Central Michigan University is well on its way toward meeting its long term goal of becoming a state-of-the-art clinical and educational facility that specializes in Fall Prevention and Balance Assessment and Rehabilitation.  This center has now become fully integrated into the Carls Center clinic operations.

Since the opening of the center, this group has developed community partnerships, including with the Saginaw Chippewa Indian Tribe.  Marketing materials, including a Web site housing informational documentation and current research updates are available, FBC Faculty/Student/Staff/Community Award ceremonies have been established to recognize excellence, an evaluation of the services the center provides are in place to assess quality, and the third annual FBC Symposium is scheduled for fall 2008.  Liana Bachand and her team are currently working to submit an NIH grant proposal and continue to improve the electronic medical record (EMR) system that is currently in place thanks to a collaboration with IT.

Through the efforts of the administration, staff and faculty in the Herbert H. and Grace A. Dow College of Health Professions and community representatives, the FBC opened its doors to its first patient in March 2007 and has grown in referral sources and patients ever since.  Additional statistics since that time can be found below, giving quantitative evidence to the abundant qualitative evidence that can be found on their satisfaction surveys:

  • Number of Patients Referred:  83 referrals received, 17 cancellations

  • Total # Patients Receiving Services:  56

  • Total # Units of Services Provided:  939 units of service

  • Number of Comprehensive Evaluations: 35

  • Number of Physical Therapy Assessments: 51

  • Number of Physical Therapy Treatment Sessions: 252

  • Number of Audiology Sessions: 30

  • Number of FBC patients referred by Carls Center: 14

  • Number of Physician Assistant Evaluation Sessions: 35

  • Referral Sources: 45

The FBC provides a comprehensive interdisciplinary program to assess, identify and treat patients with balance, mobility and dizziness disorders and the resulting loss of functional skills.  Several graduate students are conducting their research with the center and dozens of other undergraduate students from 4 departments are gaining valuable clinical experience.  For more information on the FBC, please visit their Web site (http://www.chp.cmich.edu/bridges/bridges_clinics_fbc.shtml).

This project was chosen for our August update for the groups' commitment to public service, research and teaching & learning.  Not many projects can boast the level of alignment with CMU 2010 as this one can.  Thanks for providing us with this update information, Liana!

How to Become a Spotlight Project

Since July 2006, we have included "Spotlights" on several projects that are helping CMU 2010 move forward.  Please note that we are interested in ANY project that allows CMU to realize our Vision, not only those that have been funded with CMU 2010 Vision Funds.

To share your success with the CMU community, please email CMU2010@cmich.edu.   Feel free to identify the month you would like to be featured and a short summary of progress or list of highlights to be displayed.  We are more than willing to assist you in documenting your spotlight, so you may provide the name of a contact person and the best way to reach this person for a short interview as an alternative.  We are very grateful for those that volunteer!  Thank you.
