Progress Report - September 2007
CMU 2010 Newsletter
Public Relations and Marketing will be mailing the newest CMU 2010 newsletter in early October 2007. It will feature an overview of the Key Performance Indicators, how CMU employees can get involved with 2010, interviews with staff members who have played a key role on a project, 2010 and academic performance, articles on 2008 funded projects, and the 2010 website redesign. Upcoming dates and deadlines are also included. We look forward to reading these great articles at the end of the month and applaud PR & Marketing for all their efforts in keeping the institution informed as we begin this new academic year!
Board of Trustees Presentation
Dr. Catherine Riordan, Vice Provost for Academic Affairs, and Dr. Gary Shapiro, Interim Executive Vice President and Provost, will represent CMU 2010 as they provide an annual progress report to the Board of Trustees. This comprehensive report will update the Board on topics such as how CMU 2010 is sharing the Vision with the campus community; selection, measurement and use of Key Performance Indicators; alignment and support of our priorities; evaluation and continuous improvement to the planning process; and the formation of ideas looking beyond 2010. The next update will include highlights of this presentation for those that cannot attend the public presentation on September 20th. An annual report is also in circulation to provide this information.
KPI Target Recommendations
The Communications Committee has recommended targets for the Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) to the Priority Committees. The draft report was distributed to each Priority Committee in late August as the first step in goal setting for CMU 2010 KPIs. This effort continues as each Priority Committee reviews the document. Feedback from these groups is expected by October 30th.
Off-Campus KPIs
As we begin the second half of the strategic plan, it is of utmost importance that both our on- and off-campus programs are represented in our Key Performance Indicators, as they help us measure the success of 2010. Meetings are taking place to identify comparable statistics for comparison and representation on the KPI list. Related measures are also being modified to reflect survey data gathered for ProfEd's "Quality Story" program reports.
Addition to the KPIs
Per the request of the president, Undergraduate Enrollment for both on- and off-campus students will be included in our list of KPIs. It is important to monitor these counts as it is important to grow undergraduate enrollment in our off-campus programs, and maintain enrollment numbers in our on-campus programs. At the same time, we know it is important to also focus on retention and provide the support necessary to ensure we retain these students, whether on- or off-campus, until graduation. Currently, this webpage is under construction; data will be posted as it becomes available.
Spotlight on the CMU/Flint Partnership
Mary Henley, Project Coordinator for the The CMU/Flint Partnership project, is proud to announce a successful summer of bonding between Flint high school students and their CMU mentors. Throughout these past few months, high school students have been exposed to a variety of activities geared toward helping them become successful college students, including a three-day camping trip in the Flint area with the assistance of the YMCA. The students enjoyed a ropes course, hikes, campfires and many other enjoyable camping experiences with their mentors, but were also exposed to more academically-oriented workshops to assist them in writing and preparing for the ACT. Later in the summer, students were invited to CMU for a week to further develop their writing skills and prepare for the ACT. Not only were they exposed to the class atmosphere, but also to the living and dining experiences offered at CMU.
Thanks to the partnership between the Center for Excellence in Education (formerly Michigan Schools in the Middle) and Institutional Diversity/GEAR UP, forty students that began participation at the beginning of their junior year of high school now have the opportunity to increase their ACT scores, high school GPA, and other factors that may help them become successful as CMU students. Only a few short weeks ago, students of the CMU/Flint Partnership were invited to CMU & You Day to further investigate their academic pursuits. Beginning at 9 a.m., students learned about each major of interest from a variety of sources, including faculty, staff, and current students. They also received an overview of the university and financial aid options. As the day progressed, students were then provided a writing workshop to assist with scholarship applications, with an emphasis on multicultural scholarships. Academics were incorporated with social activities yet again, as the day came to a close with a home football game.
Looking ahead, the CMU/Flint Partnership project intends to invite those forty students to CMU on October 27 to take their ACT on campus. By February, they plan to work with Minority Student Services to invite students again for a speaker and advanced workshops. By summer 2008, they would like to work with the Bridge program to introduce students to three classes over a six-week time period in transition to their first college year, if they can find a partner to share this responsibility.
We look forward to having these visitors on campus in the future, and are proud to introduce them to the wonderful culture at CMU! Thanks to Pat Benson, Project Director, Polly Matyorauta, Assistant Director, and Mary Henley, Project Coordinator for their hard work pushing this project forward!
