Priority IV
Provide service for the public good.
The university’s sense of community extends beyond our campuses to the entire state of Michigan and beyond. Our Core Values recognize that as an institution of higher learning we have an obligation to serve the public interest. Public service in an academic institution has many forms. All would recognize providing support or professional expertise to an international relief effort as public service, but public service also includes more limited aspects such as a staff member serving as an officer of a professional organization, a faculty member serving as a grant reviewer, or a student doing a special music unit at a local school. Our institution meets that challenge by merging theory and practice to strengthen student opportunities, improve the quality of life in communities, foster the advancement of knowledge and promote practical application of our professional expertise.
Strategy 1:
Sustain the quality and scope of those public outreach and service efforts that are of high quality and visibility.
Strategy 2:
Serve as a regional center for cultural and intellectual events.
Strategy 3:
Recognize and promote students’ public service efforts.
Strategy 4:
Recognize and promote faculty and staff service in their areas of professional expertise.
