Priority II
Provide educational experiences and programs that enhance diversity and a global perspective.
As declared in the strategic plan for diversity, CMU seeks to foster inclusion because it recognizes that diversity is essential to achieving academic excellence. Preparing students for productive lives within today’s multi-cultural society and the global community necessitates providing them opportunities to be exposed to and to cultivate an appreciation for perspectives, customs and beliefs different from their own. One way to foster students’ preparation is by having a diverse campus – a community includes for example persons having diverse racial, ethnic, cultural, geographical, national, gender and sexual perspectives as well as being of different ages. Another way is to offer a wide variety of programs representing domestic and global cultures, both within and outside of the classroom, that serve as catalysts and conduits for enhancing communication and understanding among diverse groups.
Strategy 1:
Increase the diversity of faculty, students and staff.
Strategy 2:
Develop and better integrate international programs into the curriculum and campus life.
Strategy 3:
Enhance programs and activities for students, faculty and staff that foster better understanding across diverse groups.
