Definition of Integrity
Priority V of the CMU Vision Plan is to “strengthen the institution’s culture of integrity”. Applicable definitions of integrity are adapted as follows for implementation by the Priority V Committee:Integrity is:
- Knowledge and conformity with moral and ethical codes that uphold the values of trust, respect and civility throughout the university.
- Having sound, accessible and internally consistent processes and resources that provide for trust, respect and civility throughout the university.
As such, integrity is not something that can be quantified or measured directly. Rather, it must be monitored or evaluated indirectly by assessment of the following:
- codes and values espoused by the university
- policies and procedures available to facilitate implementation of the codes within the operations of the university
- adherence to the policies and procedures consistent with the codes of the university
- establishment of priorities and allocation of resources consistent with the codes espoused by the university
- dissemination and education of the university community on the codes, values and expected behaviors for people who are part of the university, as well as the policies, procedures and resources that facilitate integrity within the university
- behaviors of administrators, staff, faculty and students consistent with the codes, values, policies and procedures, and resources available to strengthen the culture of integrity at CMU
Characteristics of an Institution of Integrity:
An institution of integrity:
- Does the right thing even if there are no apparent rewards or penalties for doing so, and even if no one seems to be watching.
- Has a clearly defined code. The code should express the values and beliefs of the institution. It may consist of multiple documents that address things such as ethics, rights and responsibilities.
- Recognizes and provides for a balance between rights and responsibilities for all members.
- Treats staff, faculty and students fairly and equitably.
- Is open and accountable in decision making and allocation of resources.
- Demonstrates internal consistency between stated values, policies, procedures and actions.
- Allocates resources according to priorities that are consistent with the values espoused by the institution.
- Consistently and effectively informs members/constituents of the values, priorities and strategies for assuring institutional integrity.
- Is continually self-monitoring to assure ongoing integrity.
