Measures of Success

Committee recommends how to gauge 2010 achievements

The CMU 2010 Communications Committee has recommended a way to measure the effectiveness of the university’s Key Performance Indicators.

Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) are between two and six summary measures that determine the extent to which a particular goal or priority has been met. These summary measures best describe the overall progress in each priority area.

The university’s five priorities are teaching and learning, diversity and global perspectives, research and creative activity, public service, and integrity.

Communications Committee Chair Carole Richardson said the community knows that CMU is doing great things to further its 2010 initiative. But it is time to take it a step further. Her committee developed recommendations for measuring CMU’s 2010 strides.

Using the year 2005 as a benchmark, the communications committee has recommended projected goals that they would like the university to reach by 2010.

“We have developed a draft for our targeted
recommendations. It will be released during the spring 2008 semester,” she said. “Before it is released it needs to go thorough the appropriate channels. We are only at the first level, so they may change considerably before they reach the final stages.”

She said the target recommendations draft has been given to the priority committee chairs, and they have until October 15 to make modifications.

“Each priority committee will look at rationale presented for the targets,” Richardson said. “Then we have to take the integrated recommendations document to the Institutional Strategic Planning Committee. They will have time to scrutinize the same things. And then they go to University President Michael Rao and the executive committee for review.”
