Past successes will influence future strategies

CMU 2010 approaches its halfway point Successes of CMU 2010 projects to date will help direct future strategies for how the university will achieve its vision.

The university community is approaching the halfway point of the strategic plan to become a
“nationally prominent university known for integrity, academic excellence, research and creative activity, and public service.”

Members of various CMU 2010 committees are using key performance indicators (KPIs) to analyze the trends of available measurable data and determine the extent to which a particular CMU 2010 goal or priority has been met.

Such indicators also can offer insights on ways to improve the forward progress of existing and future CMU 2010 projects, said Carole Richardson, director of special projects for academic affairs and 2010 communications committee chair.

“The KPIs will help us to direct our focus and funding to the right places,” Richardson said.

The CMU 2010 Vision Fund has provided funding for 28 projects to date. While funding has addressed each of the five CMU 2010 priority areas, Richardson explained that strategies for achieving the university’s vision of national prominence involve more than money.

In addition to hosting regular CMU 2010 informational workshops, Richardson said the communications committee will host less
formal discussion sessions – or “fireside chats” – to facilitate collaborative brainstorming and planning efforts.

“We’re seeing that collaboration is the way to go,” she said. “Our hope is that a smaller, more informal setting will generate more
enthusiasm and help everyone to focus on achieving their common goals.”

Information about these informal sessions will be available online through the calendar link at www.planning.cmich.edu. •
