Priority 1: Teaching and learning

Faculty receive training to implement
revised writing competency course

CMU 2010 earmarked $20,000 in FY06 funding under the teaching and learning priority to support the implementation of the new ENG 201 master syllabus, which now has an interdisciplinary focus and a component to help students write about empirical data.

The funding will cover the cost of conducting the ENG 201 Summer Institute, a weeklong May workshop to help approximately 30 ENG 201 instructors revise and update their teaching materials with new syllabi, writing assignments, and other class activities. After the workshop, instructors will be better equipped to assist CMU students in becoming stronger and more competent writers.

This objective is particularly vital in light of the CMU 2010 mandate to improve the quality and rigor of the UP and all the competencies, including writing.

The former ENG 201 master syllabus had been in place since the mid-1980s. Previously, ENG 201 instructors have received no comprehensive professional development or sustained institutional support in the area of teaching writing.
