DEFINITION - KPI 9
A student’s campus environment should also be supportive, to foster positive relations among different groups on campus and allow the students to succeed academically. It is imperative that students feel comfortable and can appreciate their own identity as well as respect the identities of individuals from other cultures. For this measure, all first-year and senior students were surveyed for their perception of campus climate. We hope to be able to compare students in the majority with those from underrepresented groups in the future.
Students' perceptions of their campus climate was created from a combined series of questions found on a nationally-normed survey. Using the average score taken in fiscal year 2005 as a baseline, percentage point increases for senior and first-year students in FY06 are shown below.
Differences are not statistically significant between FY05 and FY06 in either class rank.
Note: This survey was not conducted in FY07; therefore, no data will be added for this measure at this time. The sample is randomly selected. The weighting system used allows for comparability between years and class rank, as it controls for N-size, enrollment status, and gender.
Sample of Items Measured:
1. Student asks questions and/or participates in class discussions.
2. Student contributes in conversations with individuals different from themselves, in terms of religious beliefs, political opinions, or personal values.
3. Student speaks to faculty and/or staff regarding career plans.
