DEFINITION - KPI 8

In efforts to increase retention rate of undergraduate minority CMU students, percentage of six-year graduation rate of minority1 students is monitored using student enrollment from the cohort six years prior to each fiscal year.  By using the six year graduation rate, we can monitor the retention rate of the minority students attending CMU to be sure they have the support necessary to graduate.

The percentage remained stable between years (38% in FY05 to 43% in FY07). The trend seems to be positively increasing, which is very encouraging as we monitor the influence of CMU 2010.  Students are only considered for this measure if they are first time, first-year students (non-transfer) that have completed their degree at CMU.

1 Minority is defined as individuals that are of African American, Native American/Alaskan Native, Asian/Pacific Islander, and/or Hispanic origin.

Additional Clarifications:

  • Although our KPI label suggests "underrepresented groups",  we are actually referring to those in minority groups in the definition of this KPI.  Changes to label or data definition will be modified once a decision is reached.

  • Calculated using Dec/May/Aug graduates for each rough fiscal year for on-campus students.

  • Since off-campus enrolls students around the clock, their students do NOT have to be first time, first-year students.  They also create a type of cohort using the beginning of the first year and the end of the fifth year to mark graduation within six years.  These exceptions have been made as the students are typically non-traditional and face different challenges to degree completion than their traditional counterparts.

  • New data should be available around mid-October (on-campus) and Jan./Feb. (off-campus) each year*.
