DEFINITION - KPI 6

One of the ways in which CMU 2010 aspires to promote cultural diversity and global perspectives is through recruiting faculty from underrepresented groups.1

The most current information indicates the percentage of tenured/tenure-track faculty members from underrepresented groups on campus remained relatively stable from FY05 (15.9%) to FY07 (16.6%).  Thanks to campus-wide efforts, our data show an increase in the number of these diverse faculty members.  This percentage is calculated using regular minority faculty and total regular faculty at CMU.

1 Minority is defined as individuals that are of African American, Native American/Alaskan Native, Asian/Pacific Islander, and/or Hispanic origin.

Additional Clarifications:

  • Tenured/tenure-track faculty is synonymous with regular faculty.  This holds true in all cases, beyond just the Key Performance Indicators.  It is worthy of mention, though, to clarify the differences in faculty count between KPIs 3 and 6.  That is, all full-time equivalent instructional faculty are included in the Student-Faculty Ratio (regardless of tenure status).  Only regular faculty are included in this measure.

  • This measure would include on- and off-campus faculty, but there have never been regular faculty that teach strictly off-campus.  Therefore, only on-campus faculty are represented in this KPI.

  • Although our KPI label suggests "underrepresented groups",  we are actually referring to those in minority groups in the definition of this KPI.  Changes to label or data definition will be modified once a decision is reached.

  • New data should be available around Jan./Feb. each year.
