DEFINITION - kpi 2

A series of questions found on a national survey were combined to measure Student Engagement with Faculty.  Teaching and learning is best promoted by quality relationships between students and their faculty members and peers.  Similarly, it is important for students to develop academic abilities by learning to communicate effectively with members of their campus community.

A measure of students' level of engagement with faculty members was created from a combined series of 6 questions found on a nationally-normed survey.  Using the average score taken in fiscal year 2005 as a baseline, percentage point decreases for senior and first-year students in FY06 are shown below.

Results show that first-year students reported significantly less engagement in FY06 than FY05.

Sample of Items Measured:

1.   Student discusses the outcome of an assignment with faculty.

2.   Student engages in activities outside of the classroom with faculty (i.e. committees, orientations, etc.).

3.   Student is comfortable communicating in person or via email with faculty and peers.

Additional Clarifications:

  • This survey was not conducted in FY07; therefore, no data will be added for this measure at this time.  The sample is randomly selected.

  •  The weighting system used allows for comparability between years and class rank, as it controls for N-size, enrollment status, and gender.

  • New Data should be available in Nov./Dec. of each participating year.
