DEFINITION - KPI 14
External grants and contracts provide funding to support students as they engage in research and creative activity. A grant provides funding to promote the general good, whereas a contract allows a specific donor to influence a project and incorporate a request for service.
External grants requested and awarded for FY05 through FY07 are shown in the table below, using 3-year averages to minimize extreme fluctuations. Not all grant proposals were funded the same year they were submitted.
FY07 data implies that CMU is staying fairly constant in the number of submitted proposals and the amount requested, although the overall trend suggests we are not as successful in the amount of money CMU is rewarded.
The definition of research as determined by the Office of Research and Sponsored Programs at CMU: Activities specifically organized to produce research outcomes (i.e., new knowledge or a fuller scientific understanding of the subject being studied). The term "research" includes activities involving the training of individuals in research and development activities. In the context of external grants and contracts, the term “research” specifically excludes unfunded departmental research that is not separately budgeted and accounted for.
The graphs on the summary page include all research-related grants and contracts received by both CMU and the CMU-RC (Research Corporation, a non-profit corporation under the control of CMU engaged in applied research and economic development).
