Welcome, and thank you for your interest in CMU's strategic planning efforts!

Since the fall of 2008, we have been collecting the ideas of our talented

students, faculty, and staff through a number of open meetings and

an online input.  In March 2009, we also solicited input

from our Mt. Pleasant Community at an evening event. Using the

thoughtful suggestions provided, and with the use of a matrix tool

(right) initially to help direct our conversations, we have collapsed

many of our ideas into 5 strategic directions.  Thank you for your input on our

emerging strategic directions topics.

   Emerging Strategic Directions

  • Making CMU a Leader in Environmental Sustainability

  • Preparing CMU Students for a Culturally Diverse World

  • Staging the Future through Investment in Scholarship

  • Sustaining and Improving the Value of and Access to The CMU Experience

  • Expanding and Creating New Market-Driven Academic Programs

We understand these directions do not overlap directly with our current priorities.  We also acknowledge a few "assumptions" of the plan:

  • Sustainability is really important as a Triple Bottom Line - we care about environmental, social, and economic sustainability
  • The CMU Experience is a foundational strength we plan to build upon
  • The economy is an issue, particularly in Michigan, and the outlook for higher education across the state is not much better
  • CMU needs to become more creative, innovative, agile, and responsive to the environment to be successful
  • The measurement and reporting of progress on the Key Performance Indicators is key to improving
  • Transparency and openness regarding the strategic plan and CMU will continue

The goal of this development process is to extend the successes we've experienced with CMU 2010. A new plan will be developed with the insight of the new president, in conjunction with his or her conversations with the university community.  A timeline of events is available.
