Strategic Directions
The strategic direction position papers provide a definition, a context (both internal and external), and a rationale to support why the ISPC believes they will be important directions for CMU moving forward. Below are links to the most recent drafts of the position papers. These drafts were last updated at the end of March, 2009. Please click on each to read these brief but important documents that will help you understand why these particular directions are considered important to a significant proportion of the CMU community. You will be prompted to login using your CMU global ID and password.
Emerging Strategic Directions Position Papers - Most Recent Titles
- Making CMU a Leader in Environmental Sustainability
- Preparing CMU Students for a Culturally Diverse World
- Expanding and Creating New Market-Driven Programs
- Staging the Future through Investment in Scholarship
- Sustaining and Improving the Value of and Access to The CMU Experience
We understand these directions do not overlap directly with our current priorities. We also acknowledge a few "assumptions" of the plan:
- Sustainability is really important as a Triple Bottom Line - we care about environmental, social, and economic sustainability
- The CMU Experience is a foundational strength we plan to build upon
- The economy is an issue, particularly in Michigan, and the outlook for higher education across the state is not much better
- CMU needs to become more creative, innovative, agile, and responsive to the environment to be successful
- The measurement and reporting of progress on the Key Performance Indicators is key to improving
- Transparency and openness regarding the strategic plan and CMU will continue
During
Fall 2008,
Open Sessions
were held with
on- and off-campus faculty,
staff,
and students
to gain insight about what needs to be incorporated into the next
strategic plan.
Whether they are initiatives already underway that need to be continued, or new initiatives that should be added, the ISPC sought input regarding the relative value of various activities. The university has also given special attention to those initiatives based on CMU 2010, many of which have published Final Reports and Recommendations, that should be continued as we build the next plan. External factors play an integral role in our strategic directions, as CMU strives to meet state and local needs with limited resources and an increasing number of initiatives (this concept is further addressed in the strategic directions papers). Finally, our CMU 2010 Key Performance Indicators have allowed us to see where CMU has met success and where we continue to struggle. The outcomes of these measures will allow us to set a new course.
