Progress Report - January 2008

With the start of a new year, we are proud to announce several milestones in our strategic plan, CMU 2010.  As you may recall from our updates over the last few months, we have been diligently working to finalize target recommendations for our Key Performance Indicators.  We have also been providing the CMU community with additional interactive sessions, and we intend to continue to offer this information in the future.  CMU 2010 has really come a long way, and we hope you share the pride of this success with us as we move forward!

Target Recommendations

The president received a memo and attached Target Recommendations report from the ISPC in mid-December.  As of the first of year, the president has approved the recommendations.  You will find the KPI web pages on this site updated with the information in a new, revised format.

Open Forum

To kick off the new year, members of the CMU 2010 Communications Committee are proud to announce an Open Forum to further discuss CMU's Key Performance Indicators and the Related Measures.  The structure of the Open Forum will be similar to one held last fall, primarily as a lecture/presentation with time for questions and suggestions.  We plan to include our off-campus faculty, staff and students through the use of streaming video.

The ComCom will also be holding a Fireside Chat a few weeks later to discuss project ideas for the next CMU 2010 Vision Fund Request for Proposals (to be announced in April).  This session will include an opportunity to talk to potential collaborators with similar interests. Collaboration, as you know, is an important factor in enhancing the likelihood of your project acquiring funding. To that end, a discussion board has been created to facilitate collaborative efforts prior to this gathering.  We encourage you to submit your ideas to help bring folks out that may have a proposal similar to your own.  You can access this board at https://portal.cmich.edu/sites/AcademicAffairs/2010chat/default.aspx with your global id.

KPIs

The following KPIs have been updated with fall headcount data (FY08).

We hope to include student-faculty ratio by the February update.

Spotlight on Leveraging Institutional Resources: A Matching Fund for Competitive External Funding

Craig Reynolds from the Office of Research and Sponsored Programs shared some of his successes as project lead of Leveraging Institutional Resources:  A Matching Fund for Competitive External Funding.  The goal of this project is to increase the annual base funding to the ORSP matching fund account, which provides resources to be used as cost sharing on proposals submitted for external funding.

Eight projects to-date have been assisted with CMU 2010 funds through ORSP, making this investment one of the few that impacts areas across multiple priorities.  Projects assisted with matching funds include everything from research in the basic sciences to outreach and educational recruitment.  For a short description of each project supported with CMU 2010 matching funds, please visit this site.  Other significant successes to share:

  • For every $1 in CMU 2010 matching funds, ORSP returned $17 in external funding.
  • Eight awards received a CMU 2010 matching fund commitment.
  • 29:1 ratio of external funding requested ($13.5 million) to CMU 2010 matching funds proposed ($471,000).
  • 45 proposals submitted with proposed CMU 2010 match.

The matching funds are still available, so if you have an outstanding project idea and are willing to work with ORSP to attain external funding you may be eligible to obtain additional CMU 2010 funds.  The Office of Research and Sponsored Programs is always willing to foster high-quality scholarship and sponsored projects throughout the CMU community and to simultaneously assure compliance with university and sponsor regulations.  Congratulations to Mr. Reynolds and his colleagues for encouraging external funding at CMU and offering support to those who earn it!
