Throughout the month of October 2008, Provost Wallace and VP for Finance and Administrative Services David Burdette have been hosting a series of Open Meetings to gain staff feedback for what themes, strategies, and initiatives should be included in the next plan.  Until a new name is chosen, we are currently referring to the new plan as "Beyond 2010."

Over the course of the Fall 2008 semester, feedback will also be collected from CMU faculty and students.  By April 2009, the provost plans to present the next plan to the Board of Trustees.  A full timeline of events leading up through April 2009 is also available.

While we are in the process of improving on CMU's strategic plan for "Beyond 2010," we would like to make it clear that we do not plan to start over.  Our current priorities (Teaching & Learning, Diversity & Global Perspectives, Research, Public Service, and Integrity) will continue to direct our efforts at CMU.  Our current model is only one dimensional, however.  Our campus leaders' thinking is to create a two dimensional model; we would continue to use priorities, retaining Teaching, Research, and Service, and adding a fourth that refers to the Community at CMU.  This fourth priority would serve to represent the living/learning environment at CMU, from interacting with custodians to the dining halls.

The two dimensional piece becomes prominent with the use of cross-cutting themes, or innovative directions for which CMU will become known.  These themes will include our remaining two priorities, Integrity and Diversity (in the form of Global/Cultural Competency).  Others are being determined in our focus groups using input from CMU's campus community.  For a preview of the matrix, please follow the link.

This two dimensional approach will then allow for the creation of more specific strategies and initiatives all across campus.  For example, we would hope everything we do at CMU is done with Integrity - in Teaching, Research, Service, and Community.  But which strategies does CMU have for Teaching with Integrity?  Which for conducting Research with Integrity?  The purpose of our cross-cutting themes is to focus our aspirations even further than our last plan allowed us to.  And we're looking to solicit your input for these themes, strategies and initiatives, so we strongly encourage you to attend one of our scheduled staff focus groups.
