Academic Expectations

Providing students with the opportunity to take on intellectually challenging coursework as well as encouraging faculty to raise performance expectations of students promotes higher levels of academic success and increases overall collegiate quality.

The measure of students' perceptions regarding their academic expectations was created from a combined series of questions found on a nationally-normed survey.  Using the average score taken in fiscal year 2005 as a baseline, percentage point increases for senior and first-year students in FY06 are shown below.  This increase illustrates CMU senior and first-year students’ positive change in perception of their academic expectations.

Results from this measure indicate first-year respondents reported statistically significantly higher levels of academic expectations in fiscal year 2006 than fiscal year 2005, whereas results from senior respondents displayed no meaningful differences between years.*

Note:  This survey was not conducted in FY07; therefore, no data will be added for this measure at this time.

*The sample is randomly selected.  The weighting system used allows for comparability between years and class rank, as it controls for N-size, enrollment status, and gender.
